Pride in your race, your gender, your sexuality or any other unchosen characteristic is absurd. You should feel pride over an achievement, or a virtue — over something you created, not something acquired without your consent. Something you’re born with is neither a virtue nor a vice; it’s morally neutral, because morality only applies to the realm of choice. If the only things you can find to be proud about are your skin tone, the content of your chromosomes or your sexual proclivities, then you are truly lost and shallow.
