The Impeachment of President Trump: A Horrible New Precedent

Pelosi Makes It Official: We Will Impeach; Trump Responds [Daily Wire]

President Trump’s response: “The Do Nothing, Radical Left Democrats have just announced that they are going to seek to Impeach me over NOTHING. They already gave up on the ridiculous Mueller ‘stuff,’ so now they hang their hats on two totally appropriate (perfect) phone calls with the Ukrainian President,” Trump tweeted shortly after Pelosi’s announcement. “This will mean that the beyond important and seldom used act of Impeachment will be used routinely to attack future Presidents. That is not what our Founders had in mind. The good thing is that the Republicans have NEVER been more united. We will win!”

The impeachment of President Trump — the third in U.S. history, if it goes through the House — sets a brand new precedent. The precedent: Political dislike of a President is all you need to impeach him. The evidence can show the previous Vice President of the United States actually DID the thing the current President is only ACCUSED of doing, and didn’t actually do. The current President, in fact, was trying to investigate what the previous Vice President did since it would — at a minimum — be scandalous and possibly even illegal.

That’s part of the precedent, too. If you’re President of the United States, you’re sworn to uphold the law of the land. Then-Vice President Biden and his son Hunter apparently broke the law. But because Biden is a potential political rival of the current President, the current President is NOT supposed to investigate him! Nor even make it sound or look like he’s investigating him.

It’s insane.

The impeachment of President Trump has done incalculable damage to our already battered (but somehow still standing) Constitution. The bar has been lowered even more. All you need to do is dislike a President, and to be in the opposing party — and he’s out.

This means the next time we have a FULLY Democratic Congress and a Republican President, that President will be out in the first year. They’ll say: “We impeached President Trump back in 2019, with a Democratic House … so why can’t we impeach AND remove this current Republican President, since the votes are there and we dislike him too?”

People wonder aloud, more and more, what civil war looks like in the 21st Century. It seems to me that we’re already in one.

In the unthinkable event President Trump gets removed from office by the wobbly Republican Senate, I fear we will have an actual Civil War on our hands. That will be the moment America explodes.

Do the hardened, tyrannical leftists in the media, the Democratic Party and the entrenched “deep state” federal establishment think the 60-plus million who voted for Donald Trump — and plan to vote for him again — will take this without a fight? The impeachment is bad enough to spark an explosion. President Trump’s brash confidence and refusal to wobble an inch has kept things stable thus far.

How can America go on like this? It doesn’t matter that President Trump isn’t actually going anywhere. The problem is that our country has, in some respects, never been more divided. It’s worse than the 1960s. America came back together, more or less, after Vietnam ended. It is a LOT like the 1850s and 1860s. And that’s not a good sign.

As President Abraham Lincoln once said, a divided house cannot stand. We are as divided as can be.

The ONLY possible hope? A crushing win for President Trump in 2020, and a crushing punishment of Democrats, causing them to lose the House of Representatives. It’s a political bloodbath, which is far better than a literal one. I have an uneasy sense it’s not going to be that easy. But we will know soon enough.
