How to Avoid a Charlatan

Wise, honest people know what they know, and are not afraid to state it; and they also are unafraid to say what they do not know, and what is not known. Charlatans must always claim to know an answer, even when they don’t. If you spend enough time listening to a charlatan, you will start to notice wildly self-refuting contradictions, evasions, brazen falsehoods and an inability or unwillingness to admit when one was wrong. The charlatan counts on the irrational fear, the low self-confidence and/or lack of critical thinking skills in his victims, and often encounters lots of all three. That’s why there are so many charlatans in the world …. especially this granddaddy of them all.
