Hindsight is always 20/20. In hindsight, it’s clear that mail-in voting never should have been permitted. It’s challenging enough to fight voter fraud as it is. But mail-in voting, and massive absentee voting, injected subjectivity and uncertainty into an already difficult process, especially in close states. I don’t know how it could have been stopped. President Trump had the exact same challenges back when he correctly objected to mail-in voting last summer — the media, the entire Democratic Party, the entire corporate establishment, and frankly most of his own party, the Republicans. Not to mention the “Deep State” corrupted officials left over from the Obama and Bush years who wanted no part of a first-term Trump administration, much less a second one.
So here we are. Now President Trump must fight the battle AFTER the election. To me, the odds seem way more difficult to get this done in a matter of days or weeks than it would have been to stop the whole disaster last summer. Whatever the outcome, honest historians will have to conclude that mail-in voting, excused away by the coronavirus like so many of our other Constitutional freedoms, was the culprit for the doubt, dissension and possibly civil strife and warfare that followed the horrible election of 2020.
