Why Republicans Keep Losing, Even When They Win

It’s fine to blame Donald Trump for the budget bill laden with concessions to the Democrats.

However, you must remember two things. One, Donald Trump is not ideological. He never claimed to be. He probably considers it a good thing that he’s not ideological. Undoubtedly, many who voted for him consider it a good thing.

But not being ideological has its consequences. One consequence? When you’re up against opponents who are unabashedly ideological – as socialistic, unyielding, even Communistic Democrats are – then you’re going to lose. Why is this? Because the one with the most consistency to principle wins. Even when their principles are wrong.

Which brings me to the second point. Aside from Donald Trump, the Republican Party is now the party the Democrats used to be. It’s a party with some minimal respect for the private sector, as in JFK cutting taxes while expanding the role of government in all other areas of business and life. Or Jimmy Carter, working to deregulate the airlines while expanding the welfare state. Or Bill Clinton, cutting capital gains taxes on the one side, while trying to nationalize medicine on the other.

I want to say that today’s Republicans are like yesterday’s Democrats, but I don’t think even that much is true. Today’s Republicans, like Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell who squander this rare opportunity to actually cut the size, cost and scope of government, are, if anything, more committed to socialism than yesterday’s Democrats. As for today’s Democrats, they’re on the verge of being outright Communists. Bernie Sanders was just the beginning. And if you doubt what I’m saying, watch them when they eventually get back control of Congress and/or the White House. They will not let go again.

Today’s Republicans spend more on non-military, extra-Constitutional activities that most Democrats would not have supported even 25 years ago, when Bill Clinton was President. That leaves Democrats with unlimited ideological breathing room. No matter how much Republicans spend, Democrats will always demand more. No matter how much Republicans cave in and decide not to end programs they promised their constituents just weeks ago they would – Planned Parenthood, NPR, PBS, Obamacare – it’s never enough for the Democrats. They always demand more. And who can blame them? Even when in the minority, they will always get it.

Republicans cede the moral high ground in two ways. First, by lying to their supporters and everyone else. Second, by leaving the implication through their lying – that they know, deep down, they’re in the wrong.

Animals sense weakness in their prey. Human beings are no different. The way that plays out in American politics? Democrats sense the weakness in Republicans who lie, betray their claimed principles, and roll over again and again and again. We saw this dynamic throughout the Obama years, and we’re seeing it again in the same Republican Congress, only with Donald Trump as President.

If Donald Trump were ideological, in favor of individual rights, economic freedom and the original American Constitution – kind of the way he shows himself to be with issues like immigration laws and the Second Amendment – then he’d know how to stand up to Republicans and Democrats in Congress. Because he’d grasp that both sides are the enemy, and treat them accordingly.

Instead, we’re left with the exact same bloated and always-expanding, forever bankrupt federal government we had before, and we will have for years to come, unless or until we form a second party to defeat the Republicrats that continue to rule us.
