Here’s the latest attempt by the progressive left to go after free speech: Accusations of “fake news.” Fake news does exist, of course, but most of the websites they claim are guilty of “fake news” are nothing more than websites with which they disagree. It’s the same old package deal: “I don’t like something. Rather than defending my reasons for not liking it, I’ll just call it fake.” End of story.
Just yesterday, Obama lectured, “We are not serious about facts and what’s true and what’s not, and particularly in an age of social media where so many people are getting their information in sound bites and snippets off their phones.” Notice that it’s the means of communication Obama’s going after. Of course, he’s not so upset about “sound bites” or “snippets off cell phones” when those snippets are provided by some of the most notorious “news” fabricators like Huffington Post, CNN or MSNBC. He’s only upset when it’s Fox, Breitbart, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Mark Levin or anyone else with whom he disagrees.
The fixation for this latest attack on freedom of speech is Facebook. Facebook is under mounting pressure from leftists to censor “fake” news. How is Facebook to determine which news qualifies as “fake” and which does not? You guessed it: Whatever leftists like Obama deem to be fake, i.e., whatever isn’t leftist. It’s just more of the same. Do these people see how tiresome and predictable they’ve become?
Leftists have lost control of the apparatus of government, and they’re beyond freaking out. They will no longer have Attorney General Loretta Lynch or Obama’s IRS to intimidate or threaten to prosecute people with whom they disagree on Islamic terrorism, tax policy, Obamacare, global warming, etc. I guess that explains their national temper tantrum and Obama’s petulant, dour face the last few days when spouting these stale bromides.
Rest assured it’s not fake or phony news stories that will bring down American freedoms, as Obama claims. It’s actual attacks on American freedoms that will bring down American democracy or (more importantly) the American republic. Those are precisely the kind of attacks we saw during eight long years of Obama’s miserable presidency. People are perfectly capable of discerning truth and separating it from falsehood. The problem? The biggest falsehoods come not from any news sites, but from the corrupt, lying people we have installed in office.
