We can actually choose our reactions, in the following way: We can choose to be continuously aware of our inner reactions, and to bend them to objective reality, or let them stand not subjected to reality. If you accept this premise, then the capacity for a happy, benevolent state of mind becomes possible … not automatic, but possible. If you don’t accept this premise, then all the psychotherapy, medication, or self-help books in the world won’t do you any good, at all. The key is to remember that emotions are thoughts in a different form. If you have the power — and willingness — to change your thinking and ideas, then you likewise have the ability to change your emotions.
