The Fallacy of “Unconsciously Racist”

In a cartoon the sulky college student calls his parents “unconsciously racist.” The father replies that he paid $200K “for that insult.”

“Unconsciously racist.”

You can’t weaponize the subconscious in this way. You can challenge someone on their actions. You can tell someone when you believe their actions are wrong, and why. You can challenge someone’s thinking as not being logical, consistent or based on all relevant known facts. What you cannot do is claim to know another’s motives, and condemn those motives as bad without proving the motive. “You are a member of a race I don’t like. Therefore, I know your motives are bad.” It’s a way of weaponizing someone’s subconscious either to intimidate them, or get them to believe what you want them to believe. If it works, you only succeed in intimidating or confusing another; don’t kid yourself that it’s anything close to persuasion.

*******

Rosie O’Donnell and other celebrities are promoting a mass blackout: “No work, no spending, no restaurants, etc.” The point is to crash the economy or even all of civilization for a day to protest President Trump.

Why can’t socialists and Communists show us what’s GOOD about socialism? Instead of destroying everything that originally arose from capitalism? Do they actually think that orchestrating a mass blackout will make us run to Mamdani and AOC as America’s first official dictators? What is this blackout supposed to prove or accomplish?
