Has America Become the Old Soviet Union?

A couple of years ago I read a social media post written by a person who grew up in the old Soviet Union. The post said, in essence, that America has become like the old Soviet Union, in that you don’t know who to believe, about anything. In Communist Russia (as today, no doubt), the media was regulated and controlled by the government. The post said everyone knew it was deceptive, but couldn’t do anything about it. Who knew the truth, about the government or about anything else, since the government had become involved in just about everything?

That sounds a LOT like America today. We think we’re living in a free country and perhaps, on paper, we are. But not psychologically, and not in reality, either.
