Coronavirus Cancellations: Health … or Optics?

Disney World, the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade … Pretty much all of America is shutting down. I am not saying it’s right or wrong. It’s up to the owners or facilitators of these events and enterprises to use their own best judgment. But I will say this: It’s not based on judgment about health. It’s based on FEAR. Not fear of illness. That’s rational. It’s based on fear of being “the one to get it wrong.” More terrifying than your customers dying in a plague is the PERCEPTION of others that “I am not a kind, cool and — yes — WOKE person.” They probably know the risk isn’t THAT great, in many cases. But they can’t be seen as the one who got it wrong. It’s all about optics. And health is second place — at best.
