Send in the Troops … to Wipe Their Counters?!

ALBANY, N.Y. — Schools, houses of worship and large gathering places will be shuttered for two weeks in a “containment area” centered in suburban New Rochelle, the heart of what appears to be the nation’s biggest cluster of cases of the coronavirus, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday.

The state will send National Guard troops to help clean surfaces and deliver food in the area, a 1-mile-radius (1.6 km) around a point near a synagogue connected to some existing cases, Cuomo said. [from Fox Business just now]

The reaction of a reasonable, thinking person: “Good grief. Sending in the troops — like it’s the Normandy invasion? Or Hitler just entered Poland? Is THIS what the government is for — to wipe our kitchen counters and give us food when we already have plenty? Because people are getting a form of the flu which has not been fatal for most? WTF?!”

The reaction they WANT you to have: “OMG. It must be horrible. The government would NEVER do all this unless they had a good reason. It’s a catastrophe. Panic! We must turn to our leaders to help us! What else can we do!? Somebody has got to take care of us, and take over for us — asap!”

It’s crazy. If THIS is what constitutes an emergency, then what would a real emergency look like?

I guess they mean it when they say, “Never let a good crisis go to waste.” They really mean it.
