In Delaware, Children May Get to “Self-Identify” Their Race and Gender

A proposed education regulation in Delaware allows children to self-identify as any race and gender regardless of reality.

“All students enrolled in a Delaware public school may self-identify gender or race,” Regulation 225 says, and that will be maintained in official records.

The regulation stipulates that students’ parents may only be notified of their child’s trans-race or transgender identification if they are “supportive of the student” and his or her confusion.

It says:

A school may request permission from the parent or legal guardian of a minor student before a self identified gender or race is accepted; provided, however, that prior to requesting the permission from a parent or legal guardian, the school should consult and work closely with the student to assess the degree to which, if any, the parent or legal guardian is aware of the Protected Characteristic and is supportive of the student, and the school shall take into consideration the safety, health and well-being of the student in deciding whether to request permission from the parent or legal guardian.

“Every parent should be outraged by this regulation,” said Nicole Theis, President of the Delaware Family Policy Council. “It’s parents who oversee the care and protection of their children.”

Parents — not the state — oversee the care and protection of their children. It should be obvious. Why isn’t it?

Two reasons. One, state control of education. Imagine a private school trying to get away with something like this. Parents would flock from the school. It’s unlikely a privately run school would even try such a thing that’s so obviously irrational. Yet public schools get away with murder.

Second, in a state like Delaware, it’s basically a one-party state. Delaware voted overwhelmingly for Obama in the presidential elections of 2008 and 2012, and decisively for Hillary Clinton in 2016. Delaware hasn’t gone Republican for President since the Reagan years. It might never again. Similarly, Delaware hasn’t had a Republican governor since the Reagan years, and might never again. The present Governor of Delaware (pictured) has little or nothing to fear from approving such nonsense because his hard core leftist constituents will hold him to it, and the more apolitical people will keep voting Democratic in elections no matter what he does.

One-party governments are not healthy, whether in a big state like New York or California, who have similar horror stories, or a tiny one like Delaware. And it’s one-party states where the coercive oppressiveness of public schools (run by a single party) becomes clearer.

In a free market for education, with no federal/state control or subsidizing whatsoever, children would belong to themselves and to their parents — not to the state, as they do particularly in one-party states like New York, California and Delaware. In principle and practice, that’s the only morally justifiable solution consistent with America’s Constitution and its historic commitment to individual rights, which include the right of parents to educate their children as they see fit.

The absurdity of such a regulation speaks for itself. Regardless of what you think about “transgenderism”, or “trans-racism”, how on earth can a school-age child — age 5 or 10 — be capable of making such a determination? Children are fickle enough when it comes to things like food tastes, eating and play habits, things they do appreciate and understand. How or why would any remotely rational school system hand the right to “decide” one’s gender (or race) du jour over to the child?

It’s so openly absurd and irrational that I view it as a kind of dare. It’s a way for the state to tell parents, “We own your children — not you. And exactly what do you plan to do about it?”

Such a regulation has nothing whatsoever to do with rights, sensitivities or rational educational priorities of any kind. It’s all about power and control for its own sake.

When will Americans start to wake up, as they did back in the years leading up to 1776? Millions have, but millions more have not. And that’s the real danger of our era.
