President Trump vowed Wednesday to scrap the federal immigration program that allowed the New York City truck terrorist to enter the United States, and said “animals” like the suspect in Tuesday’s attack belong in Guantanamo Bay.
Sayfullo Saipov was among the maximum 50,000 people allowed into the U.S. every year under the State Department diversity visa program, which tilts toward “countries with historically low rates of immigration.”
“The terrorist came into our country through what is called the ‘Diversity Visa Lottery Program,’ a Chuck Schumer beauty. I want merit based,” Trump tweeted.
“No more Democratic lottery,” Trump said in a follow-up tweet.
The “Diversity Visa Program” is an excellent example of how ideas have consequences. Good ideas — like the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution — lead to the greatest experiment in individual liberty the world has ever seen. Bad ideas — like the idea that diversity is all that matters, the premise behind the Diversity Visa Program — lead to death and destruction.
Do you notice how career politicians like New York Mayor de Blasio are always quick to denounce terrorists as “cowardly”, while failing to demonstrate the courage to stand up to bad ideas like the Diversity Visa Program, for fear of offending someone? This is why these things keep happening again, and again and again.
The Diversity Visa Program stems from the idea that merit does not exist, that it’s judgmental to have any standards at all with immigration, and that the only thing that matters is diversity. You might call it indiscriminate or promiscuous immigration. In the non-reality-based world of Washington DC, all that matters is being seen as compassionate, “liberal” and in favor of diversity. And truck bombs are what we get.
I applaud President Trump’s attitude and hope he means what he says by backing it up. But on the local level, cities like New York are more vulnerable than ever to the sort of daily terrorism seen in places like the Middle East. The voters there want diversity for its own sake, even if it gets them unspeakable and terrifying violence. In the months and years to come, we’ll find out just how much they value their precious “diversity” over their own lives.
