NBC’s “Will & Grace” took another shot at conservatives on Thursday night, using exaggerated stereotypes to portray the right as homophobic with not-so-subtle jabs at Vice President Mike Pence.
Sean Hayes’ character, Jack, explained to Eric McCormack’s Will that he lost touch with his son because, “He moved to Texas, married someone super conservative, and he didn’t even invite me to his wedding.”
Upon realizing that he has a grandson in Texas, Will encouraged Jack to bond with him but Sean Hayes’ character didn’t exactly love the idea.
“How am I supposed to connect with a kid from Texas? I can’t fish or hunt or tell a woman what to do with her fetus,” he replied.
However, it turns out that Jack might have something in common with his grandson after all, as he is suspected to be gay. He is sent to a mock gay conversion camp called “Straighten Arrow,” where they plan to “pray away the gay,” complete with a poster of Vice President Pence.
The Media Research Center’s TV reporter Amelia Hamilton wrote that while conversion therapy is often tied to Pence, “the accusations have just never stuck, except in liberals’ minds.”
“Anything to keep pushing an oft-debunked myth, I suppose, right?” Hamilton wrote. “Debunked myths, conservative stereotypes, and overwrought situations? It looks like ‘Will & Grace’ knows they’re not going to win anybody over by being honest.”
First of all — and once again — since when did comedy have to become about politics? Since when did everything from coffee to football to Hollywood and music awards ceremonies have to become about politics?
It has all escalated since the election of Donald Trump. But Donald Trump is not making anyone turn halfway decent and often first rate comedians or football players into political hacks. They’re doing it to themselves.
But let’s go with this Will & Grace example, just the same. Let’s assume there’s hard proof that Vice President Mike Pence supported and still supports “pray away the gay” camps. I would be among the first to criticize him. But what do leftist social engineers offer us in return? Appeasement of Islam, proposed laws to criminalize criticism of Islam as “hate speech”, and a giveaway to Iran of sums so large that development of a nuclear bomb by that dictatorship is inevitable.
Under leftist policies, the world is safer for brutally vicious anti-gay hatred. No threat (real or alleged) posed by Mike Pence’s “pray to gay” camps begins to hold a candle to that.
That’s the problem when people who might be great at comedy, football and coffee get involved in politics. They’re wrong and they completely lack rational perspective and context.
No, I don’t support religious conversion camps for homosexuality, although we still need evidence that Vice President Mike Pence supports these. But I support a nuclear Iran and criminalizing “hate speech” against Islam even less. Gays and lesbians have far, far more to lose under the policies supported by the Democratic Party than “pray to gay” could ever pose to the individual rights of American citizens. Get a grip, Hollywood leftists!
