Wellesley Student Argues for Censorship: America’s Future?

If it’s true that college campus thinking represents the future of America, then get a dose of America’s future, written by a student at the prestigious and rigidly leftist, Democratic Wellesley College:

Wellesley is certainly not a place for racism, sexism, homophobia, Islamophobia, transphobia or any other type of discriminatory speech. Shutting down rhetoric that undermines the existence and rights of others is not a violation of free speech; it is hate speech. The founding fathers put free speech in the Constitution as a way to protect the disenfranchised and to protect individual citizens from the power of the government. The spirit of free speech is to protect the suppressed, not to protect a free-for-all where anything is acceptable, no matter how hateful and damaging…

Read this part again: Shutting down rhetoric that undermines the existence and rights of others is not a violation of free speech; it is hate speech. [Emphases added; also see The Weekly Standard]

And what, exactly, is “hate speech”? And how is the government to define it? The way leftist progressive intellectuals define it. As anything against environmentalism, Islamo-fascism, group identity-ism, socialism and everything else the leftists define as true, virtuous and socially correct.

What if you don’t share those views? What if you wish to express different views, partly to vent frustration and dissension, and partly in hopes of persuading others? No matter. The need to end “hate speech” — which means dissenting speech — trumps the right to free speech.

That’s Communism. That’s dictatorship. And they’re no longer shying away from it.

She goes on: This being said, if people are given the resources to learn and either continue to speak hate speech or refuse to adapt their beliefs, then hostility may be warranted. If people continue to support racist politicians or pay for speakers that prop up speech that will lead to the harm of others, then it is critical to take the appropriate measures to hold them accountable for their actions.

It’s not just the up-and-coming generation that rationalizes censorship as one’s political duty. It’s also the mindset of those recently in power. Former Federal Election Commission Chairman Ann Ravel, a Democrat, who has previously called for government regulation of conservative websites, has said it’s time for government to regulate social media. “Regulate”, when the regulations are written and enforced by progressives, will mean only one thing: censorship of opinions not consistent with those of the Democratic left.

Again: That’s Communism.

It’s really not difficult to understand, especially psychologically. People on the leftist side of things are frightened. Nobody threatens to censor them. But they consider it the equivalent of censorship to live in a society where so many don’t share their perspectives. To them, that’s force; it’s a violation of their rights. This is the mentality that gives rise to dictatorship. They still cannot fathom that half the country does not agree with them, and opted to make Donald Trump president rather than go on as we were. Their candidate, Hillary Clinton, was so confident of a landslide election victory that she barely campaigned, prompting some to wonder if she was ill. She wasn’t ill, it turned out; she was merely arrogant and over-confident.

Now that they realize their once inevitable hold on permanent political power is threatened by the democracy they used to advocate, they see only one other option: censorship.

It you can’t stop them, then shut them up. That’s what “progressivism” and what used to be called “liberalism” have come to. It’s sad, but it’s also frightening. It’s a good thing those on the other side are well-armed. Because if and when this mentality ever gets its hands on power, it’s not going to be pretty at all. The Constitution this Wellesley student uses to justify censorship wisely provided a Second Amendment for us — just in case the federal government ever decided to stop upholding the First.
