Maybe

If your beloved is strolling unwittingly toward the edge of a cliff and you are so far away that even if you run at top speed and scream at top volume you very probably will not be heard, even then you do not give up, shrug, and ponder the tragedy of existence, not if you really do love her. For every moment she is still alive, you keep on running and screaming, however much your lungs and your throat have turned to fire. You do it because rescue is possible–barely possible, but still really possible.

In most cases in life, the probable outcome, by definition, is the one that occurs. But not always. Across the ages, men have on occasion been able to achieve a cherished goal even when facing seemingly insuperable odds.

— Leonard Peikoff, “The DIM Hypothesis: Why the Lights of the West Are Going Out” (2012)
