Greatness and Excellence

It isn’t necessary or possible to be great at everything. In fact, you cheapen the concepts “greatness” or “excellence” by expecting them as the rule rather than the exception, in yourself or others. Greatness and excellence are, by definition, the minority cases. They’re abnormal — in a good way. It’s futile to expect greatness in many or most places. The desire itself is a contradiction. At the same time, it’s ridiculous to conclude, from this fact, that greatness is impossible. A thing of beauty or excellence is a rare thing — but it still exists.
