Family Values Reconsidered

As an adult, you make your own family. This is true whether you marry and have children, or not. Family are the people who deserve you, and whom you deserve. Family are people whose character and personal value are high to you. Family can consist of a blood relative, in one case; and a non-relative, in another. Some have one or the other; others, a combination of the two. Family is not an entitlement. Someone is family because they deserve to be. It takes more than an accident of birth to deserve the title. There is no such thing as “family values” in the sense normally thought. You don’t value people because they are family. You value people because of who they are — blood relative, or not.
