Knowledge is Worth Understanding

I heard a statement recently that went like this: “Don’t tell me steps 1 through 10 … Just tell me step 10.” Now THERE’S an example of the anti-conceptual, anti-thinking mentality at work. The person who said this assumes that you don’t need to know how to reach the end result … only to get there. What happens if something goes wrong with step 10? Don’t you want to know the other steps to better understand what went wrong? More than that: Don’t you CARE to know the other steps? Doesn’t knowledge of something imply full knowledge and understanding? If a task is worth doing, isn’t it worth understanding? This issue is surely a metaphor for other things. For example: If life is worth living, isn’t it worth understanding?
