PC, M.D.: How Political Correctness Is Corrupting Medicine  by Sally Satel, M.D.

"While the nation has been preoccupied with headline-grabbing subjects like HMO's, Medicare, and the millions of uninsured Americans -- all pressing issues indeed -- the 'indoctrinologists' have swooped in under the radar. And their prescriptions -- which ultimately are not about health, but rather about narrow ideas of social justice -- will be hazardous to our health." In short: ideas have consequences; including medical ones. Sadly, Dr. Satel cracked a couple of years later when, writing in The Wall Street Journal, she defended the Texas woman, Andrea Yates, who systematically drowned each of her children in a bathtub. Not even Dr. Satel could ultimately live up to the good ideas in her own book, even though it's still a good book for those of us who take ideas more seriously.

Your Drug May Be Your Problem by Peter R. Breggin

The authors contend that after 15 minutes with a physician or psychiatrist, Americans are prescribed medications that we may take for years or a lifetime, which can do more harm than good. The book lists the adverse medical reactions you may encounter, plus additional personal, psychological, and philosophical reasons for limiting or rejecting psychiatric drugs. About half the book covers withdrawing from your drug--how to do it carefully and slowly, what to expect, and how to get help--with specifics for certain drugs and a chapter on easing your child off them as well.

Blaming The Brain: The Truth About Drugs and Mental Health  by Elliot S. Vallenstein

Did you know that the psychiatrist you trust to give you drugs obtains his information from the drug companies, rather than research journals? Are you aware that psychiatrists don't evaluate whether or not you should take drugs such as Prozac -- rather, they merely determine which ones and at what dosage? Dr. Valenstein explains the reasons for these and other horrifying facts about today's mental health profession.

The Reasonable Woman: A Guide to Intellectual Survival  by Wendy McElroy

This thoroughly articulate, lucid book is not just for women. It is for any individual who wishes to improve his self-esteem. McElroy's method for improving self-esteem? Not the one you usually hear. Instead of focusing solely on your feelings, as most psychologists tell us to do, McElroy helps you to focus on your intellect. By improving your intellect, she shows, you improve your basic self-esteem. The book is stuffed with excellent suggestions for how to overcome emotional and behavioral barriers to a reasonable, sensible life. McElroy is one of the most concise and clear writers I have ever read.

The Myth of Repressed Memory by Katherine Ketcham (Contributor), Elizabeth F. Loftus

Ketcham and Loftus do not deny that sexual abuse exists, but they do demand that reason and objectivity be maintained no matter how emotional the issue. Sadly, their research shows how the pursuit of sexual abuse by non-objective psychotherapists has turned into a witch hunt.

Inside the Criminal Mind  by Stanton Samenow

Criminal personalities, the author explains, actually enjoy the thrill and challenge of conning or harming others. To respond to them properly, you must understand this fact. Superbly written and based on years of solid research.

Toxic Psychiatry by Peter Breggin

Courageously makes the case that psychological conflicts are the result of thoughts and emotions rather than physiology. This is "must-reading" for anyone considering psychotropic medication in the Age of Prozac. You won't find these facts or arguments in too many other places, since the medical establishment ignores them.

Manufacturing Victims: What the Psychology Industry Is Doing to People  by Tana Dineen

At last, a psychologist who speaks the truth: many therapists have a vested financial and/or ideological interest in turning you into a helpless, self-pitying victim. Despite occasional bouts of unfounded cynicism, the author makes many excellent and well-documented points.

Reclaiming Your Life by Jean Jenson, MSW

Psychotherapists love to tell you to "work through" your childhood issues. Rarely do they make an objective case for why and how to do this. Jenson does. If you were abused as a child, you can benefit from the author's exercises and suggestions. Despite a tendency to overstate the importance of reliving childhood experiences, her book can help you place your childhood in perspective and move on with your life. Ignore the unfortunate, yet amusing, nonsense about primal scream therapy.

The Myth of Mental Illness  by Thomas Szasz

A classic work that has revolutionized thinking throughout the Western world about the nature of the psychiatric profession and the moral implications of its practices. Szasz is a lone voice in the wilderness. He has the courage to state that the psychiatric profession routinely declares war on personal responsibility.

The Cinderella Complex: Women's Hidden Fear of Independence  by Colette Dowling

Some women handle their fear of independence by taking the traditional route and looking for a husband to take care of them. Others handle their fear by the more modern method of expressing irrational hatred towards men and demanding that the government redistribute wealth and privileges in their favor. The only solution is for women to confront the issue of independence so that they can face reality and no longer depend upon either men or the victim mentality.

Learned Optimism  by Martin Seligman, Ph.D.

Attitude is everything. If you think like a pessimist, you will become depressed and many things in your life will certainly go poorly. Pessimists believe that bad events are always their fault, will last a long time, and undermine everything. They feel helpless and may sink into depression. Optimists, on the other hand, believe that defeat is a temporary setback or a challenge; it doesn't knock them down. A nice antidote to the psychiatric establishment, which today tells us that physiology controls everything and attitude has nothing to do with depression. Seligman offers practical cognitive skills and suggestions to change your unhealthy attitudes.

Dr. Beck offers practical, understandable methods to utilize with your anxieties, fears, and phobias. A good supplement to psychotherapy.

The Death of Innocents  by Richard Firstman, Jamie Talan

A deeply engrossing story of a mother who kills her children and blames it on "SIDS" (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). This true story shows human nature at its worst -- and best. At its worst, you see examples of denial, evasion, and intellectual dishonesty in unparalleled form. At its best, you see the pursuit of objective truth, justice, and good winning out over evil. Although a work of nonfiction, the story is written like a suspense novel, at once compelling and believable. An epistemological adventure which demonstrates, in dramatic form, how the science of knowledge (epistemology) can become, quite literally, a matter of life and death.

It is an indispensable guide to choosing an effective therapist.
